It started with an observation about Grubhub. What looked like a helpful discovery feature was, on closer inspection, something far more sinister—and far more instructive.

Seth Temko was reviewing restaurant advertising when he spotted it: Grubhub was buying ads targeting people who were actively searching for a specific local restaurant by name. Not for Grubhub. Not for delivery. For a restaurant that wasn't even on Grubhub.
The Theft

Stealing "intent to purchase" at the last mile

The tactic was elegant and ruthless: intercept a customer who has already decided where they want to eat, redirect them through Grubhub, collect a 30% commission from the restaurant — and then charge the restaurant to get listed on the same platform stealing their customer.
